Raymond A. Nero, 96, of W. Oilwell Street, St. Marys, went cruising into Heaven in his little white car with his wife, Jean, by his side on Friday, May 23, 2025 after a long, happy, and full life.
He was born on August 31, 1928 in Brockway, a son of the late Anthony and Ella Squires Nero.
On November 23, 1950, at St. Marys Church, he married the late Jean Schauer Nero, who preceded him in death on January 19, 2014. Together they shared a lifetime of love, laughter, and happiness.
Ray was a member of Sacred Heart Church and retired from Calvert Distillers after many years of service. He was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army, and was a member of the American Legion. Following his retirement, he began driving school bus, a job he loved dearly and enjoyed every minute of. He also cared for the grass at Benzinger Park for many years. When he wasn't gardening and caring for his own yard, he was playing raquetball, running, or going to the gym, something he enjoyed well into his 90's. In his younger years, he met a lot of friends through bicycling, even riding his bike all the way to Wellsboro when he was in his 60's. To know Ray was to love him, with his infectious smile, endless optimism, and profound kindness that was abounding in everything he did. He could bring light to any dark room or brighten any sad day, and here's hoping that anytime you see a little white convertible riding around town, you'll be reminded of Ray!
Ray is survived by four children; Barbara (James) Dinsmore of Wellsboro, Diane (Kevin) Kohler of California, Paula (Larry) Sheehan of St. Marys, and Mary (Jack Cunningham) Hayes of St. Marys; and by his seven beloved grandchildren; Nick (Kippy) Dinsmore, Tony (Tawyana) Dinsmore, Ray (Sevinc) Penny, Chelsea (John) Carnegie, Danny Hayes, Gina (Tim McClain) Hayes, and Ellie (Kerry Ackley) Hayes, and by his cherished ten great-grandchildren. He is also survived by one brother; George (Karen) Nero of St. Marys, by a special cousin; Johnny Martino, and by numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and his wife, Ray was preceded in death by a brother; Dale Nero, three sisters; Dolly Yetzer, Eileen Rimer, and Priscilla Mortland, and by his son-in-law; Elvie Hayes.
