Joseph N. "Joe" Schroeder, 68, of St. Marys, passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, May 7, 2025.
He was born on April 16, 1957 in Clare, MI, a son of the late Walter Norman Schroeder “Norm” and Roberta Barnes Schroeder, who survives of Clare, Michigan.
Joe was a 1975 graduate of Clare High School in Michigan and graduated from Mid-Michigan Community College, where he earned his certification as a welder and fabricator. A proud Eagle Scout as well as a Veteran of the Navy, Joe served aboard the USS Mt. Vernon, having been stationed in San Diego, California. For many years, Joe owned and operated Schroeder Home Services. Together with Mike, they co-owned and operated several businesses, including a publishing company in Florida called the Sharper Edge, and later, the Highlands restaurant in St. Marys. In his younger years, Joe and his uncle saddled up a few horses, told tales and enjoyed each others company while they trekked from shore to shore across the state of Michigan, a trip Joe fondly remembered. Joe's commitment to service was evident in everything he did, and he was always willing to lend a hand to anyone in need. He had quite a talent and patience for restoring motorcycles, tractors, and antique cars, and looked forward to the victory ride when his work was complete, a testament to his skilled hands and inventive spirit. Many will remember Joe for the beautiful garden of sunflowers and wildflowers that he would plant each year along Johnsonburg Road, ensuring that others could enjoy their beauty as much as he did. With a U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and Seamanship certification, Joe had a deep appreciation for the water, and never turned down the chance to go boating.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his longtime companion; Michael Heiberger of St. Marys, two siblings; David (Yvonne) Schroeder of Coleman, MI, and Peggy (William) Stephens of Clare, MI, and numerous nieces and nephews, including Tony (Shelli), Kristi (Zachary), Kati (Brian), Matthew (Emilie), Andy (Kasey), Kayla (Tyler), and Haley (Jacob), as well as by many great nieces and nephews.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a brother; Theodore "Ted" (Carla) Schroeder.
