John Confer, 82, of Kane, ended his hardworking and unforgettable earthly journey on December 5. He was born on June 27, 1943, and spent his life rooted in the community he knew so well - and who certainly knew him.
Most people will remember John as a little bit prickly and entirely unmistakable. He was the guy who managed to get himself tossed out of more than one borough council meeting for speaking his mind - usually because he insisted on pointing out what others preferred to ignore. He was also the landlord who would padlock a tenant's door, but only after months of unpaid rent and far more patience than most would have offered. Stories like these became part of local legend, retold with disbelief, exasperation, and a certain fondness because they were so perfectly "him."
But anyone who truly knew John understood there was a softer, steadier side beneath all that stubbornness. He was kind in his own way and deeply supportive when it mattered. He raised both his grandson and his stepdaughter as if they were his own children, showing up for them with a consistency and commitment that spoke louder than anything he ever said. He believed in helping people pursue their dreams, often through quiet acts of generosity - gestures that said more about his heart than he ever would out loud.
He taught those around him that actions have consequences, that living honestly means standing behind what you do, and that taking a risk is worthwhile even when the outcome isn't what you hoped for. He offered support through action more than words, and he had a knack for appearing exactly when someone needed him. Those closest to him will remember that version most: the loyal man behind the crusty exterior, the one who cared deeply even if he'd never admit it.
John is survived by his wife, Margaret (Peg); grandson, John III; stepdaughter Trish Imbrogno; children Kelley Anderson, Suzette Cunningham and John II; and several additional grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Funeral Services are being held privately by the family.
