James Benninger

James E. "Animal" Benninger, 76, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, at Penn Highlands Elk.

He was born on February 9, 1949 in St. Marys, a son of the late Winfred and Mary Fritz Benninger.

On April 2, 1993, at Johnsonburg, PA, he married Roberta "Jean" Walker Benninger, who survives.

Animal was a graduate of Elk County Catholic High School, class of 1967. He retired from Carbide Graphite after many years of service.  He was a member of Piedmont Club and the Johnsonburg Legion Club. In his free time, Animal loved to go camping and was often found in the woods, where he enjoyed being most.  Years ago, Animal had a Harley and enjoyed riding it. He was also very fond of his pet cats.

In addition to his wife Jean, he is survived by six children; Lisa O'Dell of St. Marys, Heather Martin of FL, Renata (Mike) Haberberger of St. Marys, Jesse (Niela) Steffan of Philadelphia, James (Amanda) Benninger II of Pittsburgh, and Nathan (Heather) Benninger of Atlanta, by two stepsons; Daniel J. Serge of St. Marys, and Duane A. Serge of NV, by his 13 beloved grandchildren and by numerous great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister; Irene (Mike) Manfroni of Toby, and by several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his daughter; Sherry Benninger and his brother; Winfred "Bunny" Benninger II.

A Memorial Service for James E. "Animal" Benninger will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, July 7, 2025 at the Lynch-Green Funeral Home with Rev. Robert Zilhaver officiating.

Family and friends will be received at the Lynch-Green Funeral Home on Monday, July 7, 2025 from 10:00 AM until the time of service.

Memorial Contributions may be made to the Elk County Humane Society.
